Turmeric Latte: Sounds Disgusting, Tastes Amazing

Most summers I find myself at Greenbelt Festival over the August bank holiday weekend. A favourite spot at the festival is the Tiny Tea Tent. One night at this year’s festival I fancied a hot drink before bed and spotted a turmeric latte on the menu. It sounded horrible, but I decided to risk it – it tasted amazing.

Since then I’ve seen various people online extolling the virtues of so-called ‘golden milk’. Apparently turmeric contains something called curcumin which is meant to be mega good for you, in part due to its anti-inflammatory properties. I’ve also read that curcumin isn’t easily absorbed on its own, but requires the addition of piperine which is found in black pepper. There are lots of recipes out there, but here’s mine…

Ingredients
All measurements are approximate – experiment until you find a combination you like
1 tsp. turmeric
1/2 tbsp. maple syrup
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 pinch black pepper
1/2 tsp. coconut oil
1 cup almond (or other non-dairy) milk

Method

  1. Mix all the ingredients together apart from the milk, then add the milk gradually so it combines nicely.
  2. Heat in the microwave on full-power for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Enjoy!

The result is full of creamy, coconutty, spicy goodness. It’s probably not to everyone’s taste but if you enjoy chai you would probably like it. It’s really good before bed – let me know what you think!
